If I'm remembering correctly, I believe the squirrel in Sonic 1 was originally going to be called Sally Acorn according to one of the drafts of the Sonic Bible, but then the name was changed for whatever reason. The name was later reused for the Sally we now know.

lololol i had an old sonic comic book with sally, antoine, rose, and sonic against eggman. sally looked just like this - no tits, ofc. i can't remember for the life of me the name of the issue, but the plot went something like: sonic almost dies, amy almost tells him she loves him, amy and sally kinda compete for his affection, and we get a backstory on eggman's upbringing and sonic's chilidog career.
