Honestly I think you're dead on. It seems a bit like all of the "revenge" subreddits. When the mods tried to get more strict about the content a bunch of people complained but at the end of it everyone seemed much happier with less content that was actually appropriate. People will upvote things they like, not necessarily things they like *for a particular subreddit*, which is an important distinction. How often do you think somebody has come to the subreddit, looked at the front page and seen next to no actual hypno content, and decided against subscribing? The flood of other stuff likely does have unintended side effects and clamping down on it seems prudent.
