I've always found this mechanic within pokemon games to be a really scary prospect right... You've beaten them in a battle, to the point where they can't defend themselves anymore, and you're literally ransoming them to themselves, like, "I'll kill you if you don't pay me". Why else would all the evil villains like Team Rocket, and even Giovanni pay you for winning? They're not paying you because you won a contest, they're paying you to get away safely.
